In 1927. . .

the AWCA was formed, and...

  • Charles Lindberg flew the Atlantic in a single-engine plane and landed in Paris in 33 hours and 29 minutes after taking off from Long Island, New York. The city of New York used nearly 2,000 tons of confetti in its parade for Lindbergh.
  • Royal Dutch Airlines, also made aviation history with the worlds' first intercontinental charter flight traveling from Amsterdam to Jakarta, Indonesia, a trip which took more than 14 days.
  • Calvin Coolidge was president.
  • The first successful Television transmission occurred.
  • The first all-talking movie, The Jazz Singer, starring Al Josson, was produced.
  • Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run.
  • The Holland Tunnel was opened between New York and Jersey City.

In the Netherlands......

  • KLM, just eight years old at that time, was already operating regular flights from Amsterdam to Brussels, Paris, Copenhagen and Sweden, but not yet to the United States.
  • Queen Wilhelmina had been on the Dutch throne for 29 years.

Around the world.....

  • George the 5th was Great Britain's King.
  • Benito Mussolini was running his fascist dictatorship in Italy.
